How to Donate PDF E-mail

We need equipment donations to keep the FLPC program rolling!

What we are looking for:

  • Computers
    • Pentium-3 class with processors 500 Mhz+
    • WORKING condition (missing Hard Drives or RAM OK, but in general, functional)
    • LAPTOPS are great (if they meet specifications)
  • Hard Disk Drives
    • 10 GB or larger
    • We wipe drives using either DBAN or SecureErase software. However, we are NOT licensed to handle sensitive data so if you require verification of data destruction or secure transportation and handling of hard drives, or are otherwise uncomfortable donating your hard drives, simply remove them before donating. We have spare hard drives which can be used in their place. Alternately, you can wipe your drives before donating them. SecureErase works on most drives 15GB or larger, is very easy to use, costs nothing, securely shreds hard drive data in a matter of minutes, and meets the legal requirements of HIPAA, PIPEDA, LBA, and Sarbanes-Oxley.
  • RAM chips 128 MB or better (DIMM / SDRAM / etc)
    • 256 MB+ are desperately needed!
  • Monitors
    • WORKING Condition
  • Mouse & Keyboards
    • WORKING Condition
  • Speakers and/or headphones
  • Printers
    • PLEASE call us about printers
    • We don't generally collect printers unless they would be suitable for a lab environment
  • Networking Gear
    • PLEASE call us - we make use of a limited amount of networking gear (switches, WiFi) to set up labs.

Where / How to Donate:

We can accept donations at several locations around Greenville, Spartanburg, and Pickens - however, we'll need to schedule someone to be available. Alternately, we can (sometimes) schedule to pick the items up direct from your location.

Please drop us an email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or call us at 864.678.2194 and we will direct you to the best donation site.

What we DON'T need:

Please note: We are not in the business of electronics equipment disposal, or having to deal with somebody else's trash. This makes our effort all the more difficult. Systems MUST be in working order for us to accept them.

  • PC's that are not at least Pentium-3 class @ 500 Mhz
    • Contact us if you're not sure - we can help determine.
  • Random components
    • Power supplies
    • Motherboards
    • Loose Processors
    • Cases
  • Old Software and Manuals
    • We load new versions of LINUX !
  • TRASH, GARBAGE, REFUSE - if lightning hit your PC and fried the motherboard - it is beyond our use. Please do not pass this along to us just because we are here.

Thank you for understanding.

One Laptop per Child/SC PDF E-mail

One Laptop per Child/SC pilot project gives personal computers to state’s youngest students

GRESHAM – Five hundred kindergarten and elementary students in one of the state’s most rural school districts will receive their own personal laptop computers beginning this week as part of a new campaign to make South Carolina the first state with laptop technology in its primary grades.

State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex announced the initiative Monday at a press conference at Britton’s Neck Elementary in Marion School District Seven. That school, along with Rains Centenary Early Childhood Center in Mullins, is a pilot site for “One Laptop per Child/SC.”

A Quick Introduction PDF E-mail

The goal of the FLPC Program is to work with non-profits and businesses in the local community to facilitate free and low-cost technology initiatives using donated equipment and volunteer resources. Of course, that sounds like a rather broad goal, but the needs in each community are different and so the solutions will inevitably be varied. To date, we have worked with several non-profits in Upstate SC to distribute donated computer equipment to needy families and individuals through focused "FLPC Events".

Regrettably, in this high-tech, digitally-connected world we live in, many families lack the financial resources to purchase even a single personal computer (PC), and quite often lack the basic "digital literacy" skills necessary to become proficient with one. That's where FLPC comes in. We take used computers donated by schools, businesses, and other organizations, refurbish them and load them with a (Free!) Linux operating system and software. FLPC recipients are guided through a setup process to install their operating system and software during a brief two-hour training session. FLPC events are usually small (fewer than 15 people) and participants are encouraged to help each other and to ask lots of questions! Because the truth is that while computers may seem "intelligent", only people can teach people. In addition to leaving with a new (refurbished) PC with lots of free software, PC recipients leave with the basic knowledge and confidence necessary to feel comfortable using it. You can view a brief slideshow presentation entitled "Bridging the Digital Divide" [PDF version] to better understand the need, the FLPC solution, and how you can get involved today!
